Introduction:
Why Do We Do What We Do?
In the final analysis, we're all motivated by the same thing. Knowing what that is can change your life forever.
I'd like to begin by focusing on the ultimate purpose of our existence.
If our starting point for our lives on this earth is off base, then our entire lives will be off base as well.
This is perfectly illustrated by drawing angles using a protractor. A slight one degree change at one point produces a very significant change down the road.
Understanding what the ultimate purpose of our lives is gives us a correct starting point. Once we have a sure target, we can move forward with purpose and confidence to the fulfillment of that ultimate objective.
Now, carefully consider this: every day we're bombarded with stories about what people do. Some people steal while others freely give. Some people lie while others tell the truth. Some cheat while others play by the rules. Some kill while others save lives. Some hate while others love.
I could go on and on describing the breadth of the human experience. The interesting thing is that no matter what people do their stories are all related. Further, they're all related to you! How?
The answer to this question surfaces by answering a new question: Why do they do what they do?
I'll ask you this same question: Why do you do what you do? Think about it for a moment.
Why did you get up this morning? Did you exercise? If so, why or why not? Did you pray? Why or why not? Did you shower? Why or why not? Did you eat breakfast? Why or why not? Did you go to work? Why or why not? If you went to work, did you work diligently? Why or why not? Did you organize and plan your day? Why or why not? Did you do chores around the house? Why or why not?
Obviously, I could go on and on asking you what you did and why? Further, when you give me an answer to any of the questions, I could ask why again; and again; and again. If I were to do that, where do you think we'd end up as your bottom-line, deepest reason for anything you do?
Before I come right out and tell you what I think the bottom-line, deepest reason for anything you do is, let me tell you a story about a young man named Bobby Polacio.
